Chelsea could be set to launch a more serious move this summer for a high-profile star at one of their Premier League rivals.

Chelsea may be set to launch a more serious attempt to sign 'outstanding' £17m player

It was a very busy time around Stamford Bridge during last summer’s transfer window, so will there be a repeat in the upcoming months?

Journalist Simon Phillips reported via Substack in April that Chelsea plan to scrap their policy of only signing players aged 25 or under. Hopefully, it leads to the arrival of some much-needed experience into this very young Blues squad.

Chelsea may swoop for £17m Premier League star

SportsLens claims that Chelsea are looking at Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez as a potential transfer target for the summer window.

It is understood that Chelsea have looked at the 31-year-old Villa goalkeeper for the past 18 months but have failed to make any progress on a deal to bring him to Stamford Bridge. Now, it’s claimed that there is a feeling the Blues might make a more serious approach to try sign the gloveman.

The report adds that Mauricio Pochettino’s side feel they can sign an upgrade on their current first-team keepers, Djordje Petrovic and Robert Sanchez.

Joe Cole described Martinez as an “outstanding” goalkeeper in 2022 and urged Chelsea to try to sign him on the All to Play For podcast. Let’s see if his wish finally comes true.

Signed by Villa for £17m (BBC) in 2020, Martinez has gone on to do great things since. The Chelsea Chronicle would guess he’d cost a lot more to snatch away from Villa Park now.

Emiliano Martinez perfect for Blues

This is definitely the kind of summer signing that makes perfect sense.

First and foremost, Martinez is a quality goalkeeper that carries a big presence in net. He’s also a great shot-stopper and his game has improved when playing out from the back.

The South American star has 54 clean sheets in 158 Villa appearances in total during a great few years.

Also, the Argentine is a World Cup winner. His experience and leadership is exactly what Chelsea is crying out for.
